My mission is to introduce students to the social science skills of critical analysis and professional communication, as well as personal traits necessary so as to develop in them maturity of intellect and behavior that will allow them to not only function as a member of our society, but excel and succeed in the areas they desire, thus fulfilling their dreams for the future.
Most students, who are not going into careers in the social science fields will not remember the detailed facts taught in most of my classes. To them it will be useless trivia. With that in mind, the main goal of the Social Sciences is not to have them parrot back dates, names, and places, but to provide them a systematic means to inquire, research, examine and make a reasoned conclusion as to the events of our history and their meaning, utilizing several perspectives taught through the various fields of this department. The ability to engage in critical thinking and analysis will be a skill that will be valuable in whatever field of endeavor they choose to pursue as their life's work.
